Public Lecture: Building a Global-Oriented Learning Ethos for Master of Islamic Economics Students

A crucial factor for success in global competition is the capacity to cultivate a strong work ethic and foster creativity. By harnessing these qualities, a nation can maximize the potential of its natural and human resources. Similarly, for students, developing a strong learning ethic is akin to laying the groundwork for a robust work ethic.
"Ethos" refers to the distinctive outlook or character of a social group. The term originates from the Greek language (ethos), which encompasses attitudes, personality, character, and beliefs. This outlook is not limited to individuals, but extends to groups and even entire societies.

In the Indonesian dictionary (KBBI), work ethic is defined as the spirit of work that embodies the characteristic and belief of an individual or a group. Work, in a broad sense, encompasses all forms of human endeavor, including material, intellectual, or physical pursuits, as well as matters related to worldly and spiritual affairs.
In another sense, ethos can be interpreted as the will or desire accompanied by a strong spirit to achieve positive goals. Ethos is molded by various habits, influences, cultures, and value systems that one adheres to. Therefore, students should possess a strong work ethic, particularly in the context of university studies.

The Master of Islamic Economics (MES) students at FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga, are a group of students with the desire to acquire knowledge of Islamic economics. To achieve this, students should have an optimal learning ethic aligned with professionalism and Islamic values. The learning ethic they possess should be able to drive the spirit of competition and creativity at the global level. To this end, through a General Lecture activity featuring speakers with international experience, MES students will gain an understanding of how to build a learning ethic, particularly or postgraduate students, to face global competition.

The General Lecture activity was held on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 under the theme “Building The Learning Ethic of Master of Islamic Economics Students with A Global Orientation." The event featured three distinguished speakers, each with valuable experience from studying abroad at various times and in different locations. The three speakers were
