Two Lecturers from the MES Study Program UIN Sunan Kalijaga Present at International Conference and Conduct International Community Service in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines

The Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business (FEBI) UIN Sunan Kalijaga actively participated in the prestigious 12th ASEAN International Conference on Islamic Finance (AICIF) 2024. This year, the event was hosted by Mindanao State University in the Philippines, under the theme “Islamic Finance for Sustainable Peace and Development: Challenges and Opportunities”. FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga not only participated as an attendee but also played a central role as one of the Co-Hosts, collaborating with other renowned institutions such as the International Islamic University Malaysia, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali Brunei Darussalam, Sultan Agung Islamic University Semarang, Darussalam University Gontor, and UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. This annual international event serves as a scientific forum for academics, practitioners, and professionals to exchange ideas, research findings, and solutions regarding global Islamic economics and finance, particularly in the Southeast Asian region.
The 12th AICIF took place over two days, from November 18 to 19, 2024, at the Limketkai Luxe Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. The event featured two main agendas: the Plenary Session and the Parallel Session. The Plenary Session brought together distinguished speakers and professionals from academia and practice across various organizations and countries to discuss contemporary issues and developments in Islamic economics and finance on an international platform. The Parallel Session, the highlight of the event, provided researchers with the opportunity to present their work. They showcased their findings and discussed the role of Islamic economics and finance in accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in addressing social, environmental, and governance issues to enhance financial inclusion and poverty alleviation in the digital era.
After undergoing a highly competitive two-stage selection process involving abstracts and full manuscripts, eight articles representing FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga were selected for presentation at the 12th AICIF, conducted in a hybrid format (both offline and online). Two lecturers from the Master of Sharia Economics (MES) Study Program, Prof. Dr. Misnen Ardiansyah, S.E., M.Si., Ak., C.A., ACPA (also the Dean of FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga) and Dr. M. Ghafur Wibowo, S.E., M.Sc. (Head of the MES Study Program), had the opportunity to present their research findings in person. Both presented highly compelling research on distinct topics. Prof. Misnen focused on Accounting Conservatism in Mitigating Risks in Islamic Banks with his research titled “Moderation of Islamic Corporate Governance and the Quality of Environmental Disclosure in Relation to the Application of Accounting Conservatism in Mitigating the Risk of Islamic Banking to Face Global Economic Crisis”. Meanwhile, Dr. Ghafur explored the role of institutions in mitigating global warming in Muslim countries with his research titled “The Moderation Role of The Quality Institution on The Environment in The Era of Global Warming Mitigation: Evidence from Muslim Countries”.
In addition, the proverb “Killing two birds with one stone” aptly describes the journey of the FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga team in the Philippines. The team, consisting of four members—two lecturers from the MES Study Program and two from the Islamic Financial Management (MKS) program, namely Nor Nabilla Muhammad, S.E., M.Sc. and Izra Berakon, S.E.I., M.Sc.—not only participated in the 12th AICIF but also took the time to visit several Muslim communities in Cagayan de Oro to conduct community service activities. In addition to engaging with historical mosques as centers of Islamic outreach, the lecturers also had the valuable opportunity to share insights on halal industry supply chain management at several halal-certified Muslim restaurants.
