“The Global Insight”: Master’s Program in Islamic Economics, FEBI, UIN Sunan Kalijaga, and Asosiasi Program Studi Magister Ekonomi Syariah (APMES) Host Prof. Jürgen Rüland from University of Freiburg

Yogyakarta, July 25, 2025 — The Master’s Program in Islamic Economics (MES) at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, in collaboration with the Association of Master’s Programs in Islamic Economics (APMES), organized an International Public Lecture entitled “The Global Insight” on Friday, July 25, 2025.

The event featured Jürgen Rüland, Ph.D., Professor of Political Science at the University of Freiburg, Germany, as the main speaker. He delivered a lecture under the theme “Global Economic Governance between Deadlock and Informality: The Role of Victimhood Narratives, Legal Capacities, and Domestic Politics.” The lecture was conducted in a hybrid format, with onsite participation at the 2nd Floor Meeting Room of the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business (FEBI), UIN Sunan Kalijaga, and online participation via Zoom Meeting. More than 140 participants from various higher education institutions affiliated with APMES attended this academic forum.

In his presentation, Prof. Rüland emphasized the need to broaden approaches in International Political Economy (IPE) and International Relations (IR) so that they are not confined to what he described as “American social science,” but instead evolve into inclusive and globally grounded disciplines. He highlighted the strategic role of developing countries in shaping a more equitable global economic order through pluralistic universalism, strengthened positionality, and enhanced legal and diplomatic capacities in addressing global inequalities.

The Head of the Master’s Program in Islamic Economics at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Muhammad Ghafur Wibowo, S.E., M.Sc., stated that the forum represents a tangible commitment to the internationalization of curriculum and learning within the MES Program.

“This activity serves as an important platform for broadening the global perspectives of both students and lecturers, while fostering cross-national academic dialogue that is relevant to the development of Islamic economics at the international level,” he remarked.

The event also formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional networking between the MES Program and APMES, which consistently facilitate high-quality academic forums to support a critical, collaborative, and globally oriented scholarly environment.
