Exploring the Potential of Sharia Economics Research Based on Macro and Micro Data, the MES Program Hosts Two Leading Indonesian Economists

On Monday, September 22, 2025, and continued on Friday, September 26, 2025, the Master’s Program in Islamic Economics (MES) at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta organized a Research Camp under the theme “Exploring the Potential of Sharia Economics Research Based on Macro and Micro Data.”

The event was held at the Large Munaqosah Room, 3rd Floor of the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business (FEBI), UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. The activity was conducted with strong enthusiasm and attended by students from various cohorts, faculty members, and speakers with expertise in Islamic economics research.

The program opened with welcoming remarks from the Head of the Master’s Program in Islamic Economics, Muhammad Ghafur Wibowo, S.E., M.Sc. He emphasized the importance of the Research Camp as a capacity-building platform for students in developing skills for academic writing. On this occasion, he also launched the Writing School Program, aimed at all students—particularly first-semester students—to provide structured assistance in scholarly writing. The program was introduced in response to the academic requirement for students to submit articles to SINTA-indexed journals as part of their academic achievements.

Subsequent remarks were delivered by the Dean of FEBI, Misnen Ardiyansyah, S.E., M.Si., Ak., CA., ACPA. He highlighted that scholarly publication is not merely an academic obligation, but also a valuable professional portfolio for master’s graduates. Research, he noted, plays a crucial role in addressing both academic and practical challenges. He encouraged students to make optimal use of this opportunity, expressed appreciation to the invited speakers, and conveyed his expectation that the materials presented would be effectively applied in students’ academic writing.

Following the opening session, the first presentation (Monday, September 22, 2025) was delivered by Teguh Dartanto, S.E., M.E., former Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia. He discussed the utilization of macro and micro data in Islamic economics and business research, and provided technical guidance on strategies for writing scholarly articles that are relevant to contemporary issues and attractive to readers as well as reviewers of reputable academic journals.

The second speaker (Friday, September 26, 2025) was Novat Pugo Sambodo, S.E., MIDEC., Ph.D., a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada. He elaborated on the importance of macroeconomic data literacy from an Islamic perspective and offered practical guidance on conducting critical reviews of scholarly publications. Through his presentation, students were encouraged to deepen their understanding of data-driven research methodologies and the quality standards required for academic publication.

Overall, the Research Camp was conducted smoothly and interactively. Students demonstrated strong engagement throughout the discussion and question-and-answer sessions. Through this activity, it is expected that students of the Master’s Program in Islamic Economics at UIN Sunan Kalijaga will be better prepared to conduct macro- and micro-data-based research and to produce high-quality scholarly works suitable for publication in indexed journals.

As a follow-up initiative, the newly launched Writing School Program is expected to serve as an intensive mentoring platform, enabling students not only to complete their theses, but also to generate scholarly publications with strong academic and practical value.
