MES Students Participate in the International Conference on Islamic Economics and Business (ICIEB)

Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University, Yogyakarta once again hosted an international-scale conference, the International Conference on Islamic Economics and Business (ICIEB). This international conference, now in its third iteration, is an annual event organized by Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business (FEBI) UIN Sunan Kalijaga. The event took place over two days, from July 30 to 31, 2024, under the theme “Youth-Driven Innovations in Islamic Finance towards Sustainable and Inclusive Economic Growth.”
The primary objective of this conference was to provide a platform for academics, professionals, and other stakeholders to share expertise, information, and the latest findings. The event was officially opened by Achmad Nurdany, S.E.I., S.E., M.E.K., the chair of the organizing committee. In his opening remarks, he expressed his hope that ICIEB would offer opportunities for academics and students to present their research articles and subsequently publish them in several nationally accredited journals.
The conference was attended by approximately 111 participants from Indonesia and several other countries, including Malaysia, Bangladesh, Somalia, and more. The first day began with a Parallel Session, where both domestic and international presenters participated in hybrid (offline and online) formats, showcasing their presentations and engaging in discussions. Among the contributors was Nesha Rizky Ashari, a delegate from the Master of Sharia Economics (MES) Study Program, presenting her research paper.
The second day marked the pinnacle of the conference, officially opened by Prof. Dr. Phil. Al Makin, S.Ag., MA., the Rector of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. This was followed by a Plenary Session featuring several distinguished speakers, including:
1. Prof. Baharom Abdul Hamid (INCEIF University, Malaysia) – “Islamic Finance and its Impact on Inclusive Growth and Sustainability: A Worldwide Case.”
2. Prof. Dian Masyita (Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Indonesian International Islamic University) – “Future Trends on Islamic Finance Digital Asset: Uncertainty or Opportunity?”
3. Dr. Rahmatina A. Kasri (Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia) – “Current Development of Islamic Finance in Indonesia.”
4. Greget Kalla Buana (Islamic Finance Specialist, UNDP) – “Role of Youth in Promoting Islamic Finance Literacy.”
5. Prof. Kabir Hasan (University of New Orleans, USA) – “Current Trends and Developments in Islamic Finance Research.”
6. Prof. Hilman Latief, M.A., Ph.D. (General Director for Hajj and Umrah, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Indonesia) – “The Inclusiveness of Islamic Philanthropy and the Impact of Hajj and Umrah on the Indonesian Economy.”
7. Linda Anggrea (Owner of Buttonscarves and Islamic Finance Industry Player in Modest Fashion) – “Muslim Youth Entrepreneurship and the Islamic Finance Industry: A Focus on Modest Fashion.”
8. Dr. Muhammad Ghafur Wibowo (FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga) – “Government Role in Fiscal and Monetary Policy in OIC Countries.”
The ICIEB event was not only designed to bring together presenters with specialized papers in their respective fields but also to serve as a forum for collaboration among various stakeholders. On this occasion, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between UIN Sunan Kalijaga and several co-host universities, including Islamic University of Indonesia (UII), Alma Ata University, UIN Raden Fatah Palembang, Annaqayah University, PGRI University Yogyakarta, and UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang.
The closing session of ICIEB 2024 concluded with the announcement of the Best Paper Awards. A total of 8 Best Papers and 5 Outstanding Papers were declared winners, marking a successful conclusion to the conference.
